Constructive Conversations: Stephen Ganschow and Brad Hambrick

About The Webinar

If you keep up with the biblical counseling world, you’ve undoubtedly noticed that there has been no small disturbance in the force over the last many months. There has been much debate about who is a true biblical counselor, historic biblical counselor, so-called biblical counselor, new integrationist, etc.

These are important questions. Real differences exist between those who present themselves as biblical counselors. It is beneficial to understand these differences. Differences can be great enough to merit an examination about whether the term “biblical counselor” can be rightly ascribed to someone’s approach to counseling.

My biggest concern is that these conversations seem to be happening at one another rather than with one another. That is why I am excited that Stephen Ganschow accepted my invitation to be part of a webinar. I wanted someone I could talk with and who would be willing to talk with me.

If you are interested attending this webinar, here are four questions to orient you to the conversation Stephen and I plan to have.

  • Why Brad? I am someone for whom the term “new integrationist” has been coined and applied. In various articles about zombie-infected biblical counselors my name has been put forth as one of the people for which there should be concern. When concerns are raised, I want to have the humility and integrity to listen and invite critique.
  • Why Stephen? Stephen is a respected representative of traditional biblical counseling. Stephen has studied and taught biblical counseling for years. Stephen is a Level II certified biblical counselor with ACBC and is willing to have constructive dialogue with those who may not share his convictions.
  • Why Angry with God? My sense is that those who have concerns wonder, “What do people like Brad say in counseling?” That’s a fair question. Angry with God represents my voice in counseling as much as anything I’ve written. I thought it would provide a good starting place to produce a constructive, critical dialogue over my approach to counseling.
  • What do we hope to accomplish? We believe there is the need for mutually-honoring dialogue about real differences that exist in biblical counseling. Our goal is not to debate. Our goal is not to convince the audience to pick Brad’s side or Stephen’s side. I would assume that there are people like Stephen and people like me in almost every church or Christian community. Stephen and I want to model what it looks like for these brothers and sisters to openly discuss their differences with honor and integrity but without compromise.

Very little of the conversation will be prepared or scripted in advance. I simply asked Stephen to read Angry with God and provide me with 3 to 5 topics or questions he would like to discuss. Other than knowing the gist of what he would like to talk about, no other preparation will be made. We simply want to have an honest dialogue over real differences and allow those who have concerns on both sides of these issues to eavesdrop on our conversation. We hope doing so is edifying for the biblical counseling community.
