Empathy vs. Absorption
About The Program
Although empathy and emotional absorption are often confused, they are fundamentally different psychological and energetic experiences.
Scott joins Sara Jane to share how understanding this distinction is essential for professionals, caregivers, coaches, healers, educators, and highly sensitive individuals who regularly engage in emotionally charged environments.
Empathy is the capacity to recognize, understand, and emotionally resonate with another person’s experience while maintaining awareness of one’s own internal state.
Empathy allows a person to say: “I can feel with you without becoming you.”
Healthy empathy preserves differentiation between self and other. Importantly, empathy does not require emotional takeover or self-sacrifice, and personal boundaries.
Absorption occurs when an individual unconsciously takes on, internalizes, or merges with another person’s emotions, stress, pain, or energetic state.
Rather than witnessing emotion, the person begins carrying it.
The internal experience becomes: “Your emotions become my emotional reality.”
Highly sensitive individuals, trauma survivors, caregivers, and helping professionals are particularly vulnerable to absorption when they have not developed effective internal and external boundaries.
