Preventing the destructive effective impacts of microbial contamination is essential. That's where preservatives come into play.  Former President of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists South Africa (COSCHEM) , Kirsten Scott, will give us a broad introduction to this vital topic in this module from COSCHEM's 2-year cosmetic science certificate course.

After this webinar you should be able to:

- understand the general terms used in the preservation of cosmetics

- be award of the various factors that affect the choice of preservative system

- understand the properties expected of the "ideal preservative"

- be award of the tests available for determining the efficacy of preservatives

- understand the different actions and requirements of the more common preservatives available.

About the Presenter

Kirsten Scott began her career as an emulsions Chemist at Reckitt. Years later she's  Sales Manager at Wacker for the Middle East after stints as Business Manager at Savannah Fine Chemicals and ACI Limited. Scott earned her Associate's Degree in ND Microbiology from the University of Johannesburg, and her Associate's degree in Marketin g Manager from IMM Graduate School. 

About the Guest Scientist

Dr. Andrea Weber has a Master in Biology (MSc), a Technical Writer’s degree and a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA). Since 2003 Dr. Weber has been Director of the SCI (Science, Consultation & Innovation) unit of the Babor Beauty Group in Aachen, Germany, covering R&D, Technical Marketing and Product Safety & Regulatory Affairs.  In 2013 she joined the Praesidium of the DGK e.V. (German Society of applied and scientific cosmetics), and became President in 2021, responsible for education. Her association with the IFSCC dates to 1997 when she received the Maison de Navarre Essay Prize for young scientists at the 13th IFSCC Conference in Acapulco. She previously served on the IFSCC Praesidium 2011 to 2015 as Chair of the Publication Committee.

About the Moderator

Perry Romanowski is IFSCC Chair of Education, representing the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (USA & Canada) on the IFSCC Praesidium. He runs the cosmetic science education company ChemistsCorner.com when he isn't practicing his ukelele or continuing his 5,000+ day streak of joggling.
