Conforming to Dry Coating Thickness Requirements: A Perspective on SSPC Paint Application Standard No. 2 (SSPC-PA 2)
Measuring the dry film thickness of protective coatings and linings is one of the most widely specified quality hold points, and SSPC-PA 2 is one of the most widely specified industry standards for determining compliance to specified thickness ranges for each coat. But like many standards it is complex, and its content may be misinterpreted.
The physical act of obtaining coating thickness measurements is relatively easy, especially with today’s instrument technology. However, the steps that must be taken prior to measurement acquisition; the number of gage readings, spot measurements, and area measurements to obtain without under or over inspection; the acceptability of the readings and measurements; and the procedure to follow when unacceptable measurements are discovered are not widely understood. The importance of understanding of SSPC-PA 2 applies to facility owners, coating manufacturers and engineering firms that specify SSPC-PA 2; management and supervisors of painting contractor companies, steel fabrication shops and “blast & paint” shops that must comply with the standard as a contractual requirement; and Quality Assurance and Quality Control Coating inspectors responsible for inspecting the work. This comprehensive webinar is designed to fill the knowledge gaps to ensure a complete understanding this important industry standard.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
-Describe the basic purpose and content of SSPC-PA 2
-Describe the differences between Type 1 magnetic pull-off and Type 2 electronic gages
-Describe the procedures and frequency for gage calibration, verification of accuracy, and adjustment
-Describe the number of coating thickness measurements to obtain and how far out of tolerance the measurements can be and still conform to the specification;
-Describe the procedure for determining the magnitude of a non-conforming area; and
-Describe basic content and purpose of the ten appendices to the standard
