MASTERCLASS WEBINAR
How to Grow Subtropical Fruit
Online Masterclass
Are you fascinated by subtropical fruit?
Would you love to add some of these exotic, delicious, interesting plants to your garden, but you're not quite sure how to start?
In this 1.5 hour online Masterclass, guest presenters Paul Daley and Andre Madeira will cover all the basics of creating the right environment for subtropical plants - even if you don't live in the subtropics!
Drawing on an understanding of original food forest cultures, Paul and Andre will explain the principles and practices of establishing a custom-designed food forest that suits your lifestyle goals. They'll take you through the steps required to create a thriving backyard food forest, and show you how to scale it to suit your situation, whether you want a single food forest guild based on just one fruit tree, or are aiming for a full scale food forest.
You'll learn:
* How to assess your location, climate, and micro-climate to guide your planting
* The six layers in a food forest, and how they interact
* The top 6 sub-tropical fruit trees to include in your food forest, including needs, dwarfability, and growing hacks
* How to create a biodome microclimate to grow fruit trees and their supporting plants outside their usual range
* How to maintain a dwarf-style orchard or food forest through pruning and shaping
* Extensive plant suggestions for each of the 6 layers of your food forest
Growing fruit at home takes a lot of hard work, dedication and persistence. If you're not sure how to properly care for your subtropical fruit trees, it's easy to get excited at the nursery, and bring exotic-sounding plants home, only to see them shrivel and die. You can end up throwing a lot of money down the drain.
Paul and Andre will help you understand how to create the conditions that help your subtropical trees to stay happy, healthy, and productive.
Plus, they'll answer all your tricky subtropical questions.
By the end of the webinar you'll understand:
- How to create the right conditions in your garden to help support subtropical species
- How to create a food-forest in your backyard that provides early continuous yield (on the right scale to suit your situation)
- How to grow subtropicals in temperate zones, under the right conditions
- How to choose the right plants for your garden
- How to prune subtropicals to manage their height
- Tips and tricks for care of some of the more common subtropical fruit trees.
Paul and Andre draw on many years of experience with subtropicals at Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery, and in-place throughout Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Together they have led a project to install a 'biodome' at the nursery to demonstrate how to create a productive food forest on a small scale, that is basically self-sustaining.

Who will benefit from this workshop?
If you live in the subtropics where these plants hail from, they'll probably grow easily in your garden. But that doesn't mean there's not a lot to learn about them! Paul and Andre will cover a lot of basic care information for many of the common subtropical trees.
Gardeners that live in more temperate zones will learn how to create the right conditions to try to coax these plants into happy productivity, even outside their comfort zones.
If you've tried and failed to grow subtropicals before, this is your chance to find out what you did wrong, and how you can have more success next time.
Anyone interested in creating an urban (or rural) food forest will benefit, as well as people trying to establish a sustainable lifestyle and grow as much of a diversity of food plants as possible.
And if you're the kind of gardener who just LOVES the idea of growing interesting, unusual, exotic, or rare food plants, this is definitely the workshop for you.
About the presenters...
Paul Daley was born and raised on Daley's fruit tree nursery in Kyogle, Northern NSW, Australia, and grew up immersed in the world of subtropical fruit trees. Paul is passionate about plants, permaculture, agroforestry and ecosystem restoration. The first half of the past decade he worked throughout Indonesia on various forest restoration and permaculture projects, learning from the original food forest cultures of South East Asia. Currently focused on the power of the lens as a visual story-telling tool for change-makers, nature connection and place-making, Paul is the creative director of A Lush Forest Media.
Andre Madeira has been a supervisor at Daley’s Fruit Tree Nursery in Kyogle for 8 years, involved in all aspects of growing and selling the vast range of subtropical plants grown at the nursery. Andre was born in Portugal, and spent half of his working life as a professional chef in Portugal and the UK before he transitioned his love of food into a passion for permaculture and regenerative food production. In 2008 after studying permaculture Andre co-founded Naterra, a Non-government organization that re-invigorated sustainable farming practices in Timor-Leste. Andre worked with Naterra in Timor-Leste for 4 years, creating programs for school students, farmers and community leaders. He believes plant propagation is a vital part of resilient gardening. Andre has a passion for researching and implementing new methods in gardening, where he combines his love for greening the land, producing food and creating immersive ecosystems that rewires humans back to nature.
