Athletes are people where their mental health influences, impacts and mediates the physical performance in the training and competition environments. Mental skills, mental health and wellbeing are frequently used to describe the psychological factors involved in sporting performance, and are often used interchangeably. A more complete understanding of the similarities and differences across ‘types of psychological factors’. Specifically a ‘mental health’ framework will be provided to explore individuals’ global psychological characteristics and how these vary under situation specific contexts such as the impact and influence of internal, external and environmental hassles, demands and pressures. Understanding ‘mental health and wellbeing’ across a continuum from ‘clinical and sub-clinical to healthy and performance resilience will be offered to contextualise psychological wellbeing. These ideas will, in part, be illustrated through a thrive-manage-survive lens applied through the wellbeing meter.
