What You Will Learn In The Webinar
Refineries are – together with the ammonia production for fertilisers – the largest producer and user of hydrogen. Hydrogen is used to crack crude oil, to desulfurize it and for other processes that convert crude oil into more valuable products. We’re talking about some 50 million tons per year. This hydrogen is made from fossil fuels such as natural gas, oil or even coal.

The largest electrolyzer in a refinery is installed in the Shell refinery near Cologne, Germany. It was manufactured by ITM, and its capacity is 10 MW. If it ran 24/7 for 365 days, it would produce some 1,600 tons of (green) hydrogen. This specific refinery has an annual demand of 180,000 tons of hydrogen – which means that this relatively large (by today’s means) electrolyzer would produce less than 1% of the annual demand under ideal conditions.

Do you understand…
…how important “Green Hydrogen in Refineries” is as a subject and
…how far we still have to go?

Long story short: This electrolyzer was built in a funded project called REFHYNE. It was certainly a big step at the time it was started – but it was nothing but a start if we compare it to the needs of the planet.

On Wednesday, May 31, Mission Hydrogen will host a webinar on the topic to give you more insights.

Comment: For technical reasons, only the first 1,000 participants who enter the room will be able to ask questions in the Q&A – so please make sure you join on time.
