​​​​​​​Fragrances are mixtures of chemicals, so it is important to understand the structure of aroma molecules. It is now also  important that these ingredients be created in as green and sustainable ways possible. Environmental effects and fate are vital characteristics, and computer programs can yield useful information on aspects of aroma chemicals like biodegradability and aquatic toxicity. Aroma chemicals and mixtures also follow the laws of physical chemistry, which can explain evaporation and diffusivity behavior. Fragrances are also commonly used in surfactant and emulsion systems, where polarity and chemical stability are key factors. 

About the Presenter

Steve Herman is President of Diffusion LLC, a consulting firm specializing in regulatory issues, intellectual property, and technology development. He also serves as Scientific Advisor to Sino Lion USA.

He has been an Adjunct Professor in the FDU Cosmetic Science Program since 1993, teaching the Cosmetic Formulation Lab and Perfumery. Beginning in 2019, Steve teaches a distant learning Fragrance Science course for the University of Cincinnati.

Steve was a columnist for GCI Magazine for 17 years and has written a book, Fragrance Applications: A Survival Guide. He is a member of the SCC, ACS and AOCS.  His SCC activities include service as Chairman of the NY Chapter in 1992 and 2013, election to Fellow status in 2002, and instructor in the Continuing Education Program.

About the Host

Perry Romanowski has been Chair of the IFSCC Education Committee. since 2018. When he's not joggling to maintain his running streak of nearly 5,000 consecutive days, Perry is actively involved with both the IFSCC and the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (Greater North America).
