South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act comes into effect on 1 July 2021. All businesses with employees, customers and suppliers must now comply with the Act when dealing with personal information.
Organisations are now accountable for storing, protecting the privacy of personal information in the workplace and ensuring that it is used in a responsible and ethical manner. Non-compliance and mishandling of such data will result in not just corporate/brand reputational damage but also hefty fines, legal fees and even prison time.
Even if your organisation is compliant, are you ready to deal with factors outside your control such as cybercrimes? What are the implications if things go wrong? Have you properly secured your organisation’s IT infrastructure to prevent a breach happening and personal information from being exposed? Have you taken all the necessary steps to safeguard the personal data you are entrusted with from foreseeable risks?
