IEP, 504 and More: Navigating Educational Supports

About The Webinar

IEP, IEE, PWN, 504 - in this alphabet soup of acronyms, where is a parent to start?  Depending on where you live, different programs may be available for your child with special needs to obtain school-based assistance.  But without guides to help you navigate, the process can be downright demoralizing.

Advocating for your child with disabilities can be stressful and even more difficult with the educational system's complex rules and obtuse terminology.  While certain rights are guaranteed by federal law and within your state, accessing these rights can be challenging, no matter your child's age.

During this session, you'll hear from the following four members of the Mindful Return team:  David Whiting, J.D., who is not only the parent of special needs children, but is also an attorney focusing his practice on educational law and advocacy; Mia Durairaj and Bryan Levine, working parents and creators of Mindful Return's "Balancing Career with a Special Needs Child" program, who have gone through the IEP process with their own children; and Lori Mihalich-Levin, CEO and Founder of Mindful Return, who has been through the 504 process with her children.

Note: At Mindful Return, we feel strongly about compensating our team of working parents for the wisdom they bring to this subject. To cover the cost of our experts' time, the cost of this webinar is $99.

During this conversation, we will address the following questions:

  • How do you know if your child needs educational supports?

We will talk through how to know were to start, and we'll cover the basic laws that protect our kids' educational rights.  We'll also talk about what the referral process looks like.

  • What exactly are IEPs and 504 plans and how do I get one for my child?

We'll explain exactly what these types of supports are, how to know which one your child might need, and what school teams are looking for to know whether your child would qualify.

  • How can you best advocate for your child?

We will make recommendations about the types of data you'll need to gather, and talk through advocacy strategies along the educational continuum.  We'll also discuss options for gifted kids, private school considerations, and what happens when a child goes to college.
