Join Tasweer’s Artistic Director, Charlotte Cotton, in conversation with artist, writer and cultural interlocutor Qiana Mestrich, focusing on Qiana’s creative journey through to her latest photographic series - THRALL. Qiana will also talk about her impetus for founding Dodge & Burn: Decolonizing Photography History in 2007, which began as a blog and also functions as a monthly critique group online.

ABOUT QIANA MESTRICH:

Qiana Mestrich is a photography-focused interdisciplinary artist and writer based in New York. Born to parents from Panama and Croatia, Qiana's work often references Black mixed-race experiences from her perspective as a first-generation American. Her critical writing has been published in photo journals like En Foco’s Nueva Luz, Light Work’s Contact Sheet and SPE’s Exposure. A graduate of the ICP-Bard College MFA in Advanced Photographic Practice, Qiana is adjunct faculty in photography and social media at the Fashion Institute of Technology (SUNY).

She is represented in New York by sepiaEYE gallery where her solo exhibition Thrall (2017-2020) is on view now.

Qiana Mestrich is the founder of Dodge & Burn: Decolonizing Photography History. Established by Qiana in 2007, Dodge & Burn is an arts initiative that aims to decolonize the medium by advocating for Black, Indigenous and other photographers of color.
