Mindful Return's December Book Talk: TOUCHED OUT

About The Webinar

Becoming a parent brings to the surface a complex web of emotions and physical sensations that can be hard to untangle. For millennial mothers, the term "touched out" has become a kind of catchall phrase for a range of emotions new moms may feel after becoming parents. In her new book, Touched Out, Amanda Montei explores how this cultural phenomenon taps into bigger questions about who and what we believe women's bodies are for, as well as the complex work of passing on to children a language of consent and autonomy.

Drawing on feminist theory, popular culture, political philosophy, and literary texts, as well as her own experience becoming a mother at the height of Me Too, author and critic Amanda Montei explores the stories we tell about psychology, childbirth, sexuality, the family, "good”  mothers, and the tender bonds that form between parent and child. Touched Out delivers a powerful critique of American misogyny, and considers what it really means to care for each other in America.

Amanda is the author of Touched Out: Motherhood, Misogyny, Consent, and Control, the memoir Two Memoirs, and a collection of prose, The Failure Age. Her work has been featured at The New York Times, The Guardian, Elle, The Cut, The Meteor, Vox, Slate, The Believer, HuffPost, Ms. Magazine, Poetry Foundation, Literary Hub, and many others. She has a PhD in literature and writes the popular newsletter Mad Woman. She lives in California.
