Judge Dennis Davis in conversation with Lord Peter Hain on his journey in politics, from anti-apartheid protester to Right Honourable Lord.
Judge Dennis Davis is a member of the Commission of Enquiry into Tax Structure of South Africa and an Honorary Professor of Law at the University of Cape Town. After finishing high school at Herzlia in Cape Town, Judge Dennis Davis went on to complete his tertiary education at the University of Cape Town and Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
In 1977 and 1989 he was appointed personal chair of Commercial Law. Between ‘95 and ‘97, Judge Davis held joint appointments at both UCT and the University of Witwatersrand where he was Director of the Centre for Applied Legal Studies.
In 1988 he was elected as Judge of the High Court followed by his appointment as President of the Competition Appeal Court in 2000. He was also a Technical Adviser to the Constitutional Assembly where the negotiations for South Africa’s interim and final constitutions were formulated and concluded.
Lord Peter Hain, was brought up in South Africa and has been in politics for over 50 years. Forced into exile with his family, he was a British anti-apartheid leader. An MP for Neath from 1991–2015, he served in the Labour governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown for twelve years, seven in the Cabinet.
In 2015 he received the OR Tambo National Award in Silver for his ‘excellent contribution to the freedom struggle’.
In 2017–18 he exposed money laundering and corruption in the UK Parliament involving global corporates under then President Jacob Zuma, and gave evidence to the Zondo Commission.
He is the author of 22 books. He teaches at GIBS and Stellenbosch Business Schools.
