This World Food Day 16 October 2020, we reflect that good food must be good for people and for the planet.
The COVID-19 pandemic has escalated our discussions about food, with an emphasis on health, trust and equity. It has fast-tracked debates on nutritional offerings and choices, partnering to provide healthy foods that boost our immune system and reduce disease, and working together towards a sustainable, resilient and robust food ecosystem that protects biodiversity and is future-proofed to withstand other pandemics and climate shocks.

General Secretary Director at Danone Southern Africa. After qualifying as a dietitian from the University of Natal (Bachelor of Science in Dietetics) and then completing her in-service training (Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital Dietetics), she pursued two business degrees, Marketing Management (Damelin) and a MBA at the University of Witwatersrand in 2010. Currently, she provides critical counsel, leadership and strategic guidance on issues that help fulfil the dual economic vision of doing good while doing business.
Head Sustainable Agriculture & Smallholder-Support programme at The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The Sustainable Agriculture & Smallholder-Support programme is inspired by the possibility of an inclusive regenerative agriculture & a food system which provides for people and gives back to nature. Mkhululi worked as the regional manager for Fairtrade Africa responsible for supporting farmers in Southern African (SADC) countries. He worked as a global inspector for the Dutch certifications body Control Union managing its operations in Africa & Indian Ocean for 5 years. He has a B.Sc. Honours in Agribusiness & international food-chain management from the Dronten University The Netherlands with an MBA.
Head of Sustainability at Pick n Pay. He leads the Pick n Pay CSR programme. He holds an MBA from the University of Stellenbosch Business School and PCSB from Cambridge University. Pick n Pay has an integrated SDG aligned CSR programme which focuses on: building more ethical and inclusive supply chains; introducing increased efficiencies in energy and water consumption and decreasing waste; promoting healthy living; supporting education through the Pick n Pay Schools Club and a range of community empowerment initiatives.
Mearns Farming owner. He is a passionate dairy pasture farmer set on sustainable systems, a trained engineer and a strong community member and family man. He operates three large dairies in Mooi River, milking 2500 cows. He puts a big emphasis on staff understanding the why and how of all work needing to be done, and invests in farm training and student participation. Mearns Farm staff are all committed to protecting the environment through developing soil health, with minimum till and Multi Species pastures, improving all water efficiencies and utilizing renewable solar power.
Anchor on TV news channel eNCA. She earned her stripes as a field radio reporter at the age of 19 and her media journey includes Primedia, Supersport, Kaya FM and Jacaranda FM, covering some of the biggest news and sports stories. Breakfast Talk Radio Executive Producer, Sports Presenter, Foreign Correspondent, Editor and TV News Anchor, are just some of the hats she has donned during her career spanning more than 20 years. She was also the Head of Programming on the original team that took talk radio station PowerFM to air in 2013.
