The webinar will consider the specific challenges for PEM water electrolysis at the material and cell levels. Development goals for the next 10 years will be presented and resulting consequences for important components such as the membrane electrode assembly and porous transport layers will be discussed. On the basis of selected results from research and development, the progress made in recent years is presented.

Tom Smolinka works at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg / Germany in the Division ‘Hydrogen Technologies’. Starting in the field of PEM fuel cells, electrode poisoning and stack development he received his PhD degree from the University of Ulm in 2005. Subsequently, he managed for three years the team ‘Electrolysis’ and established in 2008 the group ‘Alternative Hydrogen Production’ at the institute. In 2013 he built up the department “Chemical Energy Storage” which performs today research and development mainly in the fields of membrane water electrolysis, solar hydrogen production and techno-economic analysis of power to gas systems.
