Growing Up at Sotterley

About the Webinar

Donald M. Barber is a Sotterley descendant.  He is third generation of the Barber family that lived and worked at Sotterley since the turn of the 20th century.  Barber will share his story on what it was like to be a child of Sotterley employees in the 1960s.

Donald Barber was born to Ruth and Bernard Barber of Sotterley on March 24, 1957.  He was the sixth of seven children born to that family. Donald spent his early years at Sotterley and was in the first wave of children to experience integrated public schools in 1965.  Donald excelled in school, eventually being awarded a National Merit Scholarship, which he used to attend St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 1975.  After graduation, Donald embarked on a career in the Human Services field and met and married his wife, Rosa, with whom he lives in quiet retirement in Hollywood. Donald currently serves as a Trustee on the Board of Historic Sotterley.

This event is made possible by the generous support of Destination Southern Maryland (Southern Maryland Heritage Area) and the Maryland Heritage Area Authority.
