Exxon Valdez Spill Anniversary Webinar

About The Webinar

When the Exxon Valdez struck Bligh Reef on 24 March 1989, the fallout was dramatic. 11 million gallons of oil were spilt and Prince William Sound was inundated with global media attention. Thrust onto centre stage, Exxon would proceed to launch one of the costliest clean-up efforts in history.

The event was a turning point for the wider shipping industry. A suite of new regulations were imposed - impacting a range of issues from vessel design to community consultation. Most importantly, the United States passed the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90) – setting a global standard for oil spill response. But how have these regulations changed the industry? Why was the Exxon Valdez such a catalyst for change? And what was it like to be involved in the clean-up and media maelstrom of such a transformative event?

Witt O'Brien's and Navigate Response are proud to present our joint webinar on the Exxon Valdez. Scheduled for the 33rd anniversary, this fireside chat will feature a conversation with Mike Gallagher, who was on scene during the clean-up operations, and Edward Ion, who covered the story from a world away with Lloyd's List. Navigate Response’s Mike Elsom will moderate the session.

  • We'll be joined by three panellists:

    (1) Edward Ion - Managing Director, Navigate Response
    (2) Mike Gallagher - Senior Managing Director, Witt O'Brien's
