Identifying & Emulating Exemplary Behavior

Thomas F. Gilbert, often called the Father of Human Performance Technology, encouraged us to identify the small bits of behavior that exemplary performers – the Super Stars in our organizations and teams – use to achieve exceptional levels of performance. When we can discover those small tactics and strategies that enable them to exceed expectations, we can often enable others to adopt some or all of those bits of exemplary behavior to improve the performance of the whole team or organization. This session explores how we have applied what Gilbert described, as part of our Performance Thinking® approach. Learn how we...

  • Identify Exemplary Performers

We don't always have hard performance data, and exemplary performers are not always exceptional in all aspects of their jobs.  So how do we do it?

  • Discover those "small bits" of behavior that make a difference

Behavior that makes a difference is not always obvious, and often it is unconscious competence. How can we figure out which bits to emulate?

  • Establish exemplary behavior in others to raise the average

Of course, with Performance Thinking, we use the Six Boxes® Model to arrange behavior influences to help others apply exemplary strategies and tactics.

  • Learn as we go, including from colleagues who specialize in this

We're not the only ones. Some of our colleagues, such as Paul Elliott and Al Folsom, have developed methods and tools for leveraging exemplary behavior.
