The Unlikely Mr Rogue: A life with Ivan Pillay
Join Daily Maverick Associate Editor Ferial Haffajee in conversation with Evelyn Groenink and Ivan Pillay as they reflect on Groenink’s latest memoir. Pillay has not spoken out about his trials and tribulations. Until now.
Ferial Haffajee is Daily Maverick's Associate Editor and former editor of the Mail & Guardian newspaper. In 2014, Haffajee was awarded the International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists and was appointed to the board International Press Institute in 2011.
Ivan Pillay started his political life in the mid-seventies as an activist in Merebank township in Durban. Together with a few comrades, among whom were several ANC and MK members who had been just released from Robben Island, he helped set up one of the first new functioning ANC units in South Africa since the sixties’ clampdown. He then spent fourteen years in Swaziland, Mozambique and other forward areas, playing a leading role in MK, the political underground and Operation Vula. After liberation, from 1999, he helped in the transformation of the South African Revenue Service. A smear campaign saw him and others in SARS’s top management resigning in 2015. He does occasional consulting and works with civil society activists.
Evelyn Groenink is a veteran journalist who started her journalism
career in the early 80s at a small left-wing newspaper in Amsterdam,
the Netherlands. After 1987, and partly as a result from her association
with the Anti-Apartheid Movement in the Netherlands, her journalistic
focus changed to South and southern Africa. She was deputy editor
for Dutch Anti-Apartheid News.
