Loss of Control In-flight's Invisible Fatal Threat : Human Factors

The hidden elements contributing to the leading cause of fatalities in aviation

About This Event

For well over a decade Loss of Control In-flight (LOC-I) has been the leading cause of fatalities in every sector of aviation worldwide. If an airplane or component was even partially responsible for a statistic like that it would immediately be grounded. Despite recent changes in training to include Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT), the problem persists. What is missing from the training we provide pilots that makes LOC-I so insidious?

Listen to two experts in the field of human factors in aviation discuss why the human factors aspects of unexpected upset events make LOC-I the most fatal of all accident causes.

Dr. Janeen Kochan is a human factors scientist, instructor pilot and airline captain. Kochan's areas of research include unexpected events, pilot expertise, human performance, decision making, stress and fatigue, automation, workload, resource management and training.  She provides pilot training and is an active FAA-Designated Pilot Examiner. Dr. Kochan has participated in many international working groups and Aviation Rulemaking Committees devoted to UPRT and Airman Certification Standards.

With an academic background in human physiology, Dr. Eric Groen is an enthusiastic scientist, consultant, and lecturer on various human factors topics. His research is aimed at supporting pilot performance in demanding situations which may, for example, lead to startle or surprise, spatial disorientation, and loss-of-control in-flight. If not recognized and adequately managed by the air crew these situations may have catastrophic consequences.
