He has an intimate knowledge of Oman thanks to a solo 55-day kayak journey along the entire coastline, an 80-day journey on foot and by camel from south to north, and eight years ago, with two Omani companions Mark became the first person in 85 years to retrace the first ever crossing of the Empty Quarter-the largest sand desert on earth, a journey of 49 days.
