Understanding the shifting crypto regulatory landscape
18 September 2024
An IITPSA Blockchain and DevOps SIG Webinar

Bitcoin was introduced to the world as a response to the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis and the ensuing financial chaos. Satoshi Nakamoto famously and immutably embedded a message on the genesis block of Bitcoin that referred to the UK government bailing out banks. Bitcoin is software driven and does not need a controlling central authority making it censorship resistant and incorruptible. In the last 15 years Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have grown to be a formidable asset class that has achieved mainstream adoption. This naturally resulted in crypto coming under the scrutiny of regulatory bodies across the world.

There are various pieces of legislation that have come into existence both in South Africa and in other countries. In this fascinating discussion Candice Mesk will provide a clear picture of the regulations that apply to cryptocurrencies and how it impacts the average individual. It will be a Q&A style webinar with John Singh asking questions and Candice will answer them using her considerable knowledge of regulation. There will also be a thought-provoking discussion on the need for regulation and whether it goes against the original philosophy upon which Bitcoin was created.
