For many decades researchers have looked to replace the gold standard ISO 24444, which has a skew towards UVB and a complete lack of visible light. This blind spot can be filled in by transmission measurement in vitro or by in silico calculation. The hybrid diffuse reflectance method (HDRS) combines in vitro and in vivo data, while not generating an erythema. To give all alternative methods a fair evaluation, an industry-wide group is forming Consortium ALT-SPF. As co-initiator of ALT-SPF and chair of ISO TC 217, Mr. Osterwalder will bring us up to speed on their findings.
Uli Osterwalder is Principal and Owner of Sun Protection Facilitator GmbH and a member of the Swiss SCC. After studying chemical engineeing at ETH Zurich, Switzerland then the University of Houston, Texas he worked in industry, including Ciba-Geigy, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, BASF and DSM. He has been involved with ISO on the development of new UV protection assessment methods since 2006 and is now Chair of the technical committee on Cosmetics (ISO TC 217). He lives in the beautiful city of Basel, Switzerland.
Perry has been formulating cosmetic products and inventing solutions to solve consumer problems since the early 1990’s. Additionally, he has written and edited numerous articles and books, taught continuing education classes for industry scientists, and developed successful websites.
