Burst Suppression-A friend or a foe

About The Webinar

An EEG pattern consisting of low/moderate to high voltage activity alternating with flattening of EEG (isoelectric) is called Burst Suppression (pattern). This pattern is commonly seen in ICU in patients with epileptic encephalopathies and those undergoing induced hypothermia and in OR (under general anesthesia). Conditions like refractory status epilepticus can increase mortality and morbidity. Burst suppression is induced as a therapeutic tool to protect the brain from detrimental effects of status epilepticus, hypoxia and TBI to name a few. There are cases where sustained burst suppression (in OR and ICU) can cause delirium and cognitive decline and deficits. The morphology and duration of bursts as well as the duration of suppression are of great clinical importance.
This webinar will discuss the basics of burst suppression and its role in protecting the brain and side effects.
