PTSD in our Companion Animals

​​​​​​​In this talk we will discuss what is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and how research on Military Working Dogs applies to our companion animals and how our knowledge of treatment for PTSD can be applied to pets.


About the Presenter

Dr. Pike graduated from Colorado State University in 2003.  After graduation, she was commissioned as a Captain into the Army Veterinary Corps where taking care of the Military Working Dogs returning from deployment spurred her interests in behavior medicine. In 2011, Dr. Pike started a Residency program with Dr. Debra Horwitz, DACVB and became board certified in 2015.
Dr. Pike is owner of the Animal Behavior Wellness Center in Fairfax, Virginia, a suburb of the Washington DC area. Dr. Pike is a member of the Fear Free Advisory Committee, a clinical instructor with E-training for dogs, and an Advisory Board member with Royal Canin. Her clinical interests include thunderstorm phobias, the gut-brain connection, and chronic pain as a contribution to behavior. Dr. Pike has spoken across the globe on behavior medicine, has authored numerous book chapters and articles, and was recently named one of the “Top Veterinarians of Northern Virginia” by NoVa Magazine for the fourth year in a row. In her spare time she enjoys gardening and hanging out with her 12 year old daughter, her 7 year old son, her active duty Army husband, and her menagerie of pets.
