FREE ONLINE SCREENING & PANEL DISCUSSION
Nobody's Metaphor Online Screening
Muslim Girls Fence is a unique and exciting project by Maslaha and British Fencing that bring together the sport of fencing, conversation and creativity. Open to all women yet centring the needs of Muslim women, participants attend a series of fencing classes and immersive creative workshops, designed around topics of conversation chosen by them.
In 2019, Chouette Films followed one of these projects in a school in North West London, and we would like to invite you to an exclusive online screening. We launched the film at the Tate Modern at the beginning of the year, and whilst we are hoping we can do some more in-person screenings soon, we hope you can join us for this exciting and unique event.
The film will be followed with a panel discussion during which you will also be able to take part and ask questions. Our panel includes:
Saimah Asghar is an educator, mentor and linguist who holds a BA in Arabic and Development Studies and a Masters degree in Arabic and English Translation from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Saimah completed her Teach First training at Harlington School where she is currently working as an English teacher. Saimah is a member of the UK Board of Rabata, an organisation promoting positive cultural change through creative educational experiences.
Dr Azeezat Johnson is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the School of Geography, Queen Mary University of London. She completed her PhD on Black Feminism and the clothing practices of Black Muslim women in Britain. Her current project asks how Black women in London create spaces of home whilst navigating the racism exposed through the Brexit referendum. She is co-editor of The Fire Now: anti-racist scholarship in times of explicit racial violence.
Yashmin Harun is the first Asian Muslim Woman to sit as a Non-Executive Director at British Fencing and Elected Director at London Football Association. She also Chair’s Muslimah Sports Association – a charity tackling inactivity amongst BAME and Muslim females. Yashmin has over 20 years Banking experience and brings this corporate background to promote positive inclusive experiences. Yashmin also consults and engages with many NGB’s to advise how to better engage and improve accessibility to sports for BAME women.
The panel will be chaired by Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan, who is a writer, poet, speaker and educator invested in unlearning and interrogating narratives around race, gender, Islamophobia, state violence, and colonialism. She is the author of her debut poetry collection, ‘Postcolonial Banter’ (Verve Poetry Press, 2019); co-author of the anthology, A FLY GIRL’S GUIDE TO UNIVERSITY: Being a woman of colour at Cambridge and other institutions of power and elitism (Verve Poetry Press, 2019), and host of the Breaking Binaries podcast. Suhaiymah has written for The Guardian, Al-Jazeera, the Independent and more.
When you sign up you will be sent the link to watch the film and reminders for the event. We look forward to seeing you there!
