The Neurobiology of Safety
We are living through challenging times. But all over the world caring people and organisations are right on the front line making vital contributions to creating a better world for excluded and vulnerable people.
However this can come at a cost. Being at the receiving end of other people's trauma can have a profound effect on anyone over the long term. Staff and volunteer burn out is a reality and work that should be meaningful and fulfilling can become difficult and overly stressful over time, leading to illness, overwhelm, depression and secondary trauma.
The good news is, it doesn't take much to make a profound change in those feelings. In this training I will share a simple overview of the nervous system under stress and give tools to help you manage the feelings that come up as a consequence of being around other humans going through crisis. Just as we have a neurobiology of threat, we also have a neurobiology of safety. The safer you feel in yourself - emotionally and psychologically - the safer others will feel around you, making your work more effective and your experience more sustainable over the long term.
Volunteering should be a life-enhancing experience - I hope to give you some knowledge and tools to help make sense of the experience you've been through and allow you to transition safely into the next stage of your life.
