Saving Pangolins In Gir

The pangolin is truly an unusual mammal. In fact, very little is known about the population of Indian Pangolins, as no systematic studies have been conducted to gauge its population.

A massive reduction in their numbers could lead to an increase in insect damage to food crops. This relatively unknown mammals is extremely important to the survival of its forest homes, and the people living around it.

An insectivorous mammal covered in scales, it is highly threatened by poaching, usually for its scales or meat that are both highly prized in traditional eastern medicine and habitat loss.
In fact, pangolins are the most heavily trafficked protected animals. Many are also unnecessarily killed, as they are misunderstood and considered ill omens. Pangolins are useful in the ecosystem in helping control insect populations.
