Steel Production with Green Hydrogen

Steel production is responsible for 7.2% of global CO2 emissions. The CO2 emissions are mainly caused by using coal to reduce iron ore.

83% of iron ore is mined in China, Brazil, Australia and India. 51% of the world's steel is produced in China, followed by India with 6%. CO2 emissions vary by country, by available electricity mix, and by production technology, but experts agree that 1.9 tons of CO2 per ton of steel as a good estimate.

Green hydrogen can be used to reduce iron ore and thus significantly reduce the CO2 footprint of steel production. This "green steel" is indispensable for "Net Zero" due to the size of this sector.

Currently, there are some pilot plants in the world to further explore, understand and implement this technology, but there are also still many technological, economic and regulatory questions.

To further understand the transition of the steel industry to "Green Steel", the renowned Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik (LBST) published a comprehensive study in March 2022.
