Hydrogen: hope, hype and science

Free Webinar
June 15, 4 pm in Berlin, 7 am in Los Angeles, 11 pm in Tokyo, 10 am in Toronto

If hydrogen is the answer to the ultimate question of life, energy, and climate change, why haven’t we built a hydrogen economy already?

Is the hydrogen economy more hype than hope? What are its challenges from the immutable laws of thermodynamics, to technology, to safety and cost that have limited it to date? And as the commodity community begins to focus on it, what questions need to be asked?

Paul says: “Hydrogen is being sold as if it were the “Swiss Army knife” of the energy transition. Useful for every energy purpose under the sun. Sadly, hydrogen is rather like the largest Swiss Army knife, the Wenger 16999 Giant. It costs $1400, weighs 7 pounds, and is a suboptimal tool for just about every purpose! Why do you hate hydrogen so much? I DON’T HATE HYDROGEN! I think it’s a dumb thing to use as a fuel, or as a way to store electricity. That’s all. I also think it’s part of a bait and switch scam being put forward by the fossil fuel industry. And what about the electrolyzer and fuelcell companies, the technical gas suppliers, natural gas utilities and the renewable electricity companies that are pushing hydrogen for energy uses? They’re just the fossil fuel industry’s “useful idiots” in this regard.”

Paul Martin is a chemical process development expert from Toronto, Canada, with a 30 year history of working with, making and using hydrogen and syngas. He is also a lifelong environmentalist and advocate for decarbonisation. He is a co-founder of the Hydrogen Science Coalition. The Hydrogen Science Coalition is a group of independent academics, scientists and engineers who are specialists in hydrogen from production to potential end use sectors. They want to ensure that policy decisions on hydrogen reflect the most effective path forward in our journey towards net-zero emissions by 2050.
