 The Deutsche Bahn AG, the national railway company of Germany, is one of the largest users of energy with some 25 TWh of electricity and some 450 million liters of Diesel. To decarbonize both the railway grid and the non-electrified part of the operations – some 3,000 diesel powered locomotives – is a huge challenge.

Trains powered by hydrogen and fuel cells are one option to reduce the carbon footprint of any railway operator.

Deutsche Bahn has developed a strategy to implement hydrogen as an energy carrier into their portfolio. The first train is a local train called “Mireo”, developed by Siemens Mobility. It will be refueled using a mobile refueling station that can be used wherever a new hydrogen train shall be tested. The hydrogen will be produced by an electrolyzer, connected to the railway grid.

​​​​​​​In this week’s webinar, experts from both Deutsche Bahn and Siemens Mobility will present their strategy to use hydrogen for trains, the mobile hydrogen refueling station and the state of the art on the technology side.
