The largest market for hydrogen today is ammonia production, which is mainly used for fertilizer production. This segment of some 50 million tons of hydrogen will grow in the coming years due to an increase in fertilizer demand and due green hydrogen trade in the form of green ammonia.
However, handling ammonia is far from being straightforward. Ammonia is corrosive, it causes burning of the eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory tract and can result in blindness, lung damage or death. Ammonia production in the so-called Haber-Bosch process happens at some 250 bar and 400 degrees Celsius, making it a technical challenge as well.
